Earth Science Preprints - Ideas and Action Items

A ‘preprint’ can be defined as a manuscript draft that has not yet been peer reviewed for formal publication. Authors share early versions of their work, solicit feedback, and work on revisions prior to their formal submission for peer review. ESIP is looking to coordinate an effort to build a community-led pre-print service that can span the Earth sciences and provide new publication capabilities for Earth scientists and data professionals. We have been approached by the Center for Open Science to partner with them and use their new pre-print server platform. So we have the technology side covered. What we still need to do is build the social side. And that is where your help is really important. You could do your own pre-print service. Any society can. But we need to think bigger. By combining our efforts into a common pre-print service we can grow this more quickly and realize its potential that much sooner for all Earth scientists. So, what would you like to see in a pre-print capabilities and governance? How would you disrupt the current publication model?

Technical Infrastructure

ESIP does not intend to host the physical infrastructure of Earth science preprints. Rather, we'd like to work with our community partners to leverage free and open-source software/infrastructure. With the growing interest in preprints several options have emerged: http://wiki.esipfed.org/index.php/Pre_Print_Services We are currently leaning toward the Center for Open Science's system coupled with the PLOS QA system. ...more »

Roadmap and Action Items

Having objectives and milestones will help focus discussions and move the entire process forward. What are these milestones? What is a reasonable timeframe? Here are a couple of suggestions. 1.) Gather commitments from other societies (e.g. AGU, EGU, GSA, Geoscience World) to join with the ESIP Preprint Cluster as an initial advisory board (deadline: October) 2.) Generate by-laws and initial set of tasks for advisory ...more »

A Preprint System Should...

There are a number of publication options currently available in the Earth sciences. To be truly successful a new preprint system needs to add value. The following ideas have emerged from ESIP Preprint Cluster discussions. What is missing? An Earth Science preprint system needs to: 1.) Accept null result papers that are not currently being accepted elsewhere 2.) Capture less formal types of publications - e.g. best ...more »

What does governance look like?

By combining our efforts into a common pre-print service we can grow this more quickly and realize its potential that much sooner for all Earth scientists. And we can do so with a nimble governance team where each society's interests are valued. But, what does that governance team ...more »

Earth Science Preprints - Ideas and Action Items

Preprints not just for "sexy science"... but real science. Null results, confirmation studies, data, methods.

One of the ways a preprint service can help disrupt and refactor academic publishing is by including research results that are important to science but which are left under the bus by current publishers: null results, confirmation studies, data, methods. It's not a new idea... but even the publishers who claim to want to do this somehow... DONT actually do so. What types of science information should be included in ...more »
